Activated carbon GAC, PAC or EAC: which one for each application
Activated carbon is one of the most versatile purification materials in industry. Its huge internal surface area lets it capture contaminants from liquids and gases. But the right format makes all the difference: granular (GAC), powdered (PAC) or extruded (EAC).
Granular activated carbon (GAC)
Irregular particles, usually between 0.2 and 5 mm, used in fixed beds through which the liquid or gas flows. They are hard and give a low pressure drop.
- Drinking water and wastewater treatment.
- Removal of chlorine, taste, odour and micropollutants.
- Food and beverage industry.
Powdered activated carbon (PAC)
Very fine particles dosed directly into the liquid and then removed by filtration or settling. It offers the fastest adsorption of the three formats.
- Decolourisation of sugar, oils and chemicals.
- Short-term water treatment during contamination peaks.
- Purification in the pharmaceutical and food industries.
Extruded activated carbon (EAC)
Cylindrical, hard, low-dust pellets, ideal for the gas phase, where pressure drop and mechanical strength are critical.
- Air filtration, odour control and VOC removal.
- Solvent recovery.
- Protective equipment and gas purification.
Technical parameters to consider
- Iodine number: an indicator of adsorption capacity for small molecules.
- Hardness and abrasion: important in fixed beds and reactivation.
- Particle size: defines pressure drop and kinetics.
- Ash and moisture: affect purity and performance.
- Raw material: coconut shell, coal or wood, each with a different pore structure.
Specialty carbons
Demanding applications use impregnated carbons (acid gases, mercury, hydrogen sulphide), acid-washed carbons (food, pharma, ultrapure water) and high-activity grades.
Frequently asked questions
Which activated carbon is best for water?
For continuous plants, GAC in a fixed bed is usually the best option. PAC is useful for short-term or seasonal treatment.
Can activated carbon be reused?
GAC can be thermally reactivated and used again, reducing cost and waste.
