MAP, MOP and NPK: how to choose phosphate and potash fertilizers
After nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are the nutrients with the greatest impact on crop yields. MAP and MOP are the most widely used sources of these nutrients and the base of many NPK formulations.
How to read an NPK formula
The three numbers show the percentage of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P₂O₅) and potassium (K₂O). MAP 12-61-0 has 12% nitrogen, 61% P₂O₅ and no potassium. MOP 0-0-60 has 60% K₂O.
MAP: monoammonium phosphate
MAP combines ammoniacal nitrogen with highly soluble phosphorus.
- MAP 12-61-0: soluble grade, ideal for fertigation and hydroponics.
- MAP 11-52-0: granular grade, used for base dressing and blends.
The slightly acidic pH of the solution (4.0–4.5) helps uptake and compatibility with drip irrigation systems.
MOP: potassium chloride
MOP is the most consumed potash fertilizer in the world, with 60% to 62% K₂O. Potassium regulates water in the plant, strengthens roots, increases stress tolerance and improves fruit and grain quality.
- Standard (0–4 mm): for compound production and direct application.
- Granular (2–4 mm): for bulk blending and mechanical spreading.
Colour ranges from white to pink and red depending on origin, with no effect on nutrient content.
Rock phosphate
Rock phosphate is the raw material for the entire phosphate industry. It is used to produce superphosphates and phosphoric acid and can be applied directly to acid soils. In feed grade it is used as a mineral supplement in animal feed.
How to choose
- Fertigation and intensive crops: soluble MAP.
- Base dressing for grains and cane: granular MOP and MAP.
- NPK production: MAP, MOP and urea with compatible particle sizes.
Frequently asked questions
Does the chloride in MOP harm crops?
Most crops tolerate MOP well. For chloride-sensitive crops, such as tobacco or some vegetables, potassium sulphate may be preferred.
Can I blend MAP, MOP and urea?
Yes, as long as particle sizes are similar and the blend is stored in dry conditions.
