PVC, PE or PP: how to choose the right polymer
PVC, polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) are the most widely used polymers in the world. Each has its own properties, and choosing the right grade matters as much as choosing the polymer.
PVC
PVC is rigid, chemically resistant and has good fire resistance. It becomes flexible with plasticisers.
- Applications: pipes, window profiles, cables, coatings and medical devices.
- Key parameter: the K-value, which indicates molecular weight and guides the choice between extrusion and injection.
Polyethylene (PE)
PE is the most produced plastic in the world and comes in several families:
- LDPE: flexible and clear, for films and bags.
- LLDPE: more puncture resistant, for stretch film and packaging.
- HDPE: rigid, for pipes, bottles, drums and rigid packaging.
Polypropylene (PP)
PP combines low weight, stiffness and good heat resistance.
- Homopolymer: rigid, for injection moulding, raffia and fibres.
- Copolymer: more impact resistant, for automotive parts and packaging.
Technical parameters that matter
- Melt flow index (MFI): shows how easily the polymer processes and guides the choice of process.
- Density: distinguishes the PE families.
- Additives: UV stabilisers, antistatics and antioxidants.
Masterbatch
Masterbatch is a concentrate of colour or additives added to the polymer during processing. It colours the product or gives it specific properties without changing the base material.
How to choose
- Piping and construction: PVC or HDPE.
- Film and flexible packaging: LDPE or LLDPE.
- Injection-moulded and automotive parts: PP homopolymer or copolymer.
Frequently asked questions
What is the melt flow index?
It is the amount of molten polymer that flows through a standard die in 10 minutes. Low values suit extrusion; high values suit injection moulding.
Can I use recycled polymer?
Yes, in many applications. Quality depends on the source and processing of the recyclate.
