Recycled or virgin plastic: quality, cost and sustainability

Regulatory pressure and brand sustainability targets are driving demand for recycled plastic. But replacing virgin polymer with recyclate requires a clear understanding of the differences in quality, cost and processing.

Virgin polymer

It is produced directly from petrochemical feedstocks. It offers consistent properties, neutral colour and a tight specification, making it the natural choice for technical, medical and food-contact applications.

Recycled polymer

It comes from collecting, sorting, washing and reprocessing plastic waste. It can be post-industrial (factory scrap, cleaner) or post-consumer (used packaging, more variable).

  • Benefits: lower carbon footprint, compliance with recycled-content targets, often competitive cost.
  • Challenges: variation in melt flow index, contamination, colour and odour.

What EU regulation says

The new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) sets minimum recycled-content percentages for plastic packaging from 2030. This will increase demand for high-quality recyclate in the coming years.

How to secure consistent recyclate

  • Ask for the technical data sheet with melt flow index, density and contaminant content.
  • Confirm the source of the waste: post-industrial or post-consumer.
  • Run processing trials before going into production.
  • Require recycled-content certification where applicable.

Blending virgin and recycled

In many applications the best solution is a blend: recyclate lowers cost and footprint, while virgin polymer secures mechanical properties and process stability.

Frequently asked questions

Is recycled plastic cheaper?

It depends on the market. High-quality recyclates can cost as much as or more than virgin, especially when demand is high.

Can recyclate be used for food contact?

Only when the recycling process is authorised for that purpose. In most cases it is used in non-food applications.
